Il mwcaTENS (mwcqacronimo di mwcgTranscutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator, in mwcwitaliano "stimolatore elettrico transcutaneo dei mwdanervi") è uno strumento che produce scariche elettriche usate per stimolare i nervi attraverso la mwdqcute.

Il nome fu coniato da Charles Burton.cite-ref-burton1974-1-0[1] In genere lo stimolatore viene collegato alla cute tramite due o più mwfaelettrodi. Un TENS a mwfqbatterie, nella maggior parte dei casi, si compone di un mwfggeneratore di corrente, strumenti di controllo della mwfwfrequenza e dell'mwgaintensità e alcuni elettrodi.

I TENS vengono utilizzati nella mwhaterapia del dolorecite-ref-2[2], ad esempio nella mwiqdorsopatia, e ha molti sostenitori. Altri esperti, invece, sostengono che il suo uso non produca effetti.

Una mwiwmetanalisi condotta nel mwja2007 su diversi studi indica l'uso del TENS come una valida mwjqneuroterapia per il trattattamento del mwjgdolore cronico muscolo-scheletrico.cite-ref-3[3]

Nelle mwlacure palliative e nella terapia del dolore, inoltre, i TENS vengono usati per tentare di alleviare le mwlqnevralgie.cite-ref-4[4] L'effetto di una terapia di questo tipo sui pazienti può variare da caso a caso in base a caratteristiche individualicite-ref-5[5] come ad esempio la soglia di dolore.cite-ref-6[6]

I TENS vengono usati anche nelle pratiche mwwgBDSM per giochi erotici che comprendono l'mwwwelettrostimolazione.

A seconda delle ASL, a seguito di visita specialistica del mwxqfisiatra, la TENS può (raramente) essere eseguita a carico del mwxgServizio sanitario nazionale anche presso strutture convenzionate. In alternativa, è possibile noleggiare l'elettrostimolatore pagando un canone di affitto di pochi euro al giorno.

Per alcune mwyaartrosi e mwyqartriti, i mwygreumatologi talora prescrivono la TENS in combinazione all'uso di un mwywantinfiammatorio sistemico, come un mwzacortisonico a basse dosi scalate nell'arco di 2-3 settimane.
